Bonser Building Contractors was awarded the contract to perform a large extension for Holy Cross Catholic school in the village of Whitwick. The extension eventually would allow for two additional classroom, two small wet preparation areas, store rooms, and additional boys and girls toilets. Dean “Mitch” Mitchison was appointed the supervisor on behalf of Bonser Building Contractors with Howard Lidwell being appointed on site foreman for the duration of the works.
The works were started in the spring half term and ran till the end of the summer holidays in preparation for the new term. In order to prevent disruption to the schools, systems were established to ensure that the working site was fully segregated, heras fencing with vision barriers were installed where necessary, an alternative access route for all trades was set up to avoid interfering with the main schools access, and segregated welfare and office facilities were positioned within the site area. Due to these considerations at the start of the job the school was able to continue as normal without any disruption to classrooms or lessons.
With the sheer size of the building, a steel superstructure was initially installed before being encapsulated in brickwork skins, large aluminium windows and doors were installed throughout. All classrooms were then finished with wet preparation areas, the boys and girls toilets incorporated IPS system W.C. and vanity hand basins supplied by Venesta Washroom Systems.
